By Pierre CHEMIN and Patrick DUBOSC

All along his career, and even when retired, Michel TOITOT, born on January 7, 1927, has been, and is still an esteemed specialist, renowned in the French NDT world, especially when dealing with MT.

We would like to make him better known by our readers.

A paper (1) on our Website has pointed out some problems linked to calibration/verification.

The first one is about the words themselves: calibration and verification have difficult-to-grasp differences in meaning, in English as well as in French. We recommend you read again this paper.

Another point we underlined is the "quality" of successive internal "calibrations" made by users themselves. This paper gives an example based on three UV-A radiometers from the same company.

Revised in February 2012

Once again, we have to draw our readers’ attention to some terms used on Websites and in documents, meetings, conferences, training documents, etc.

This month, the topic is "methods" versus "techniques", terms that, although they mean different things, are often used one for the other in Non Destructive Testing (NDT).

Even nowadays, in the 21st century, the difference between fluorescence and phosphorescence as defined underneath is in the minds of many engineers, trainers, etc.

• Fluorescence is an emission of light that disappears with the end of excitation.
• Phosphorescence is an emission of light that goes on for some time after the end of excitation.

One of us, invited by the French COSAC(1) to the 49th International Paris Air Show Le Bourget, which was held on June 20-26, 2011, had the opportunity to be very close to and to marvel at the seeing of aircraft during their world première, such as the Airbus A 400 M, Boeing B 747-8 Intercontinental, etc.

This month, we are to give you some pieces of information dealing neither with PT nor MT, as the topic is the future Airbus A 350 XWB.
