PT Lexicon (English/French)
April 2010
Updated in February 2012
Many technical documents dealing with PT (standards, specifications, conferences, papers, etc.) have been published along the years, and we are surprised that, quite often, terms used are not those written in standards.
Though an ISO 12706:2000 standard should have been the basis for a worldwide vocabulary, the situation is that too many writers of specifications, papers, conferences, use their own terms, which may add to some confusion.
As this standard was under revision in 2008, we sent proposals which, due to a combination of circumstances, were almost not considered in the ISO 12706:2009.
For instance we had suggested to replace "Rinse" by:
• Water rinse
Process of removing, by means of water, most of the excess of the post-emulsifiable penetrant from the test surface before the application of the hydrophilic emulsifier.
• Water wash
Process to remove, by means of water, the excess of the water-washable penetrant or the post-emulsifiable penetrant after emulsification.
We also advocated to introduce the "Doubt Removal" also known as the "wipe-off technique", with the following definition:
When using fluorescent penetrants, this is intended to check and to interpret indications beyond criteria. Wipe the indication smoothly using a soft paintbrush or a swab lightly moistened with a volatile solvent such as acetone. Then spray a light coating of a solvent-based (non-aqueous wet) developer for linear indications (or no developer for non linear indications). If, within two minutes, the indication reappears, under ultraviolet radiation, the discontinuity is confirmed.
In international Conferences it is known that "on-the-spot translators" meet problems to use the right wording, even when preparing their task well in advance. This may lead to troubles in understanding translations.
In the following table, users may find useful clues: terms are in alphabetical order.
For every term, the first one is the standardised one (when it exists) and the following ones are "professional terms" which may be of some help when reading some documents.
Our readers may find a difference between this document and the glossary in the Non Destructive Handbook, third edition; Vol. 9, Visual Testing, ASNT, Colombus, OH (2010) about the meaning of "non-relevant". We think there is a difference between "non-relevant" and "non-significant". The "non-relevant" definition in the above mentioned book is more "non-significant" than "non-relevant".
"Indication, non-relevant" definition after this NDT Handbook: "Indication that has no relation to a discontinuity that might constitute a defect. Test response caused by geometry or by a physical condition that is not a discontinuity".
Please have a look to our definitions of "non-relevant" and "non-significant", and feel free to send us your comments, especially if English (be it British English or American English) is your mother tongue.

(*) In ISO 12706:2009, "penetrant testing materials" was translated into "produits de ressuage d'essai"; it should be:"produits de ressuage". This is the typical example of a wrong translation, which was been checked by specialists!
